the huldufólk (hidden people) of Iceland

Eve had many children, and it was hard work to keep them all washed and clean. One day, when she was bathing them, she received a visit from God, and, ashamed of the children she had yet to wash, she quickly thrust them out of the house to go and play in the fields.

God wanted to see her offspring, and Eve proudly presented him with her smart, clean babies. He asked whether she had any more children, to which she answered that she did not. But it is not possible to tell untruths to God, and he informed her that 'what man hides from God, God will hide from man.'

Eve never again saw her unwashed children. They live still in the landscape. But they are hidden from human sight.
